Mission Hills is an affluent neighborhood located atop hills a few miles from the coast and just north of downtown San Diego. Residents on its western and southern slopes enjoy some of the best views in the city while others slope into private canyons or across the community north ridge. Many of the homes are historic masterpieces designed and built by some of the greatest architects and craftsmen of the 20th century. There are a handful of modern marvels of architecture dotted throughout town as well. While most of this exclusive hilltop neighborhood is residential, there are boutique shops and restaurants to enjoy along Washington Blvd and some of its less-traveled streets. Mission Hills’ Pioneer Park is somewhat of a hidden gem. It is a real treat to wander through its shaded paths or picnic on its main lawn. While there isn’t much draw for tourism here, you’d be hard-pressed to find a neighborhood that offers such a high quality of life for those that can afford it.
Mission Hills public schools are part of the San Diego Unified School District. The public elementary school, Ulysses S. Grant Elementary School, caters to grades K-8. With no public high school in the neighborhood, students must choose between attending Point Loma High School or San Diego High School.
Parks and Recreation
Mission Hills happens to be home to one of the larger metropolitan parks in San Diego proper. Pioneer Park really is a hidden gem and is far less popular than some of the more well-known green spaces in the city. If peace and quiet in the open air are what you seek, this historic hillside will not disappoint.
Restaurants and Groceries
Don’t let its residential facade fool you. Mission Hills offers some of the finest gastronomic experiences in San Diego. Its close proximity to Old Town San Diego allows its residents and visitors plenty of dining and shopping options.
One of the reasons Mission Hills is able to maintain its uncrowded streets is the fact that hotels and motels are non-existent within the community. Not to worry, out-of-town guests have myriad options just a stone’s throw from town in Mission Valley and surrounding areas.
